Doan Huy Chuong and Son Nguyen Thanh Dien on hunger strike in prison

< A >
Nguyễn Bắc Truyển - Translated by Như Ngọc (Danlambao) - Two political prisoners, Doan Huy Chuong and Son Nguyen Thanh Dien have gone on hunger strike for three days to protest the harsh detention of Xuan Loc Prison in Dong Nai, their family said.

Son Nguyen Thanh Dien was arrested in 2000 and sentenced to 17 years in prison. Doan Huy Chuong, arrested in 2010, got a 7-year sentence in prison. Both political prisoners are detained in Camp No. 2 of Xuan Loc Prison.

Xuan Loc Prison detains hundreds of political prisoners. Recently, this prison transferred 5 political prisoners, Tran Huynh Duy Thuc, Nguyen Hoang Quoc Hung, Phan Ngoc Tuan, Huynh Anh Tri, and Nguyen Ngoc Cuong, to Xuyen Moc Prison in Ba Ria, Vung Tau, suspecting those political prisoners got involved in the riot at Camp No. 1 on the morning of June 30, 2013. Although the General Department of Prisons and Xuan Loc Prison confirmed the press that political prisoners were not related to the riot of regular prisoners, on the night of June 30, 2013, the five prisoners were transferred and placed in solitary confinement with their legs shackled in Xuyen Moc Prison.

Earlier in October 2013, Mai Thi Dung and Do Thi Minh Hanh, two female political prisoners who have been very ill, were transferred to Thanh Xuan Prison, Hanoi, in a prison van on a rough drive of almost 2,000 km while their hands and feet cuffed and Ms. Dung was on her hunger strike. The long, excruciating trip made them exhausted and fainted several times.

The harsh detention far away from home is an inhuman treatment that is banned by International Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Vietnam joined these two conventions and plans to sign the Convention against Torture in late 2013.

We continue to cover their hunger strike.
