Dear First Lady,
Re: Mother Mushroom, Nhu-Quynh Ngoc Nguyen aka "Mẹ Nấm"- Vietnamese human rights activist and prisoner of conscience On behalf of the Federation of Vietnamese Au Co Women,
I would like to write this letter to seek your intervention with the Vietnamese Government for the release of Mrs. Nguyen who rightfully deserves to be one of the most significant symbol of the struggle for human rights and democracy in our birth country Vietnam.
Presently, Vietnam is still one of the rare remaining communist countries in the world, including China, Cuba, Laos and North Korea where the one-party-rule applies and where human rights and democracy are brutally suppressed.
On March 29, 2017, you presented the International Women of Courage Award to 13 extraordinary women at the State Department for their exceptional courage in advocating for peace, justice and human rights. Mrs. Nguyen was one of these award recipients, unfortunately she was not present at the ceremony to receive this pretigious award mainly because of her incarceration by the Vietnamese Communist Government.
Nhu-Quynh Ngoc Nguyen, Blogger and Environmental Activist, was charged under the section 88 of the 1999 penal code for “spreading propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.” She subsequently was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Section 88 is unconstitutional even under the infamous 2013 Vietnamese Constitution but because the regime is a dictatorship, there is no independent judiciary to invalidate such provision.
The conviction and sentencing of Mẹ Nấm are unjust and inhumane which violates all standards of human decency.
Our federation and the Vietnamese people, both inside and outside of Vietnam would be eternally grateful if you could intervene on her behalf so that she could be released and re-join her family which includes an elderly mother and 2 young children who suffer immensely in her absence.
Faithfully yours,
Dr. Thuy-Linh Pham
President of the Federation of Vietnamese Au Co Women
