“When a crime is found, we will send notice to the family”

The mother of university student Nguyen Phuong Uyen, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nhung, was very worried when she went to Saigon to look for her daughter. While talking to us, she could not hold back tears when she mentioned her child, “At home she used to remind me that I should not buy Chinese products, worrying that I might forget she noted down in a notebook the bar codes so that I could recognize which one was Chinese. For the last few days, each time I picked up the notebook I missed her terribly. Uyen's maternal grandmother is in the emergency room due to a leaky heart valve, I did not want my mother to worry so I only told her that Uyen was busying studying for exams and therefore could not be home... Now I don't know where to find her”.
We took her to the rental unit where Phuong Uyen lived, a tiny room about 15m2 in the alley at the end of Duong Duc Hien Street, Tan Phu District. Here, we met Phuong, Uyen's roommate. Phuong was amongst the three roommates summoned to the local police station and questioned for more than 7 hours on the 14th October about Uyen 's activities. “I asked what crime did Uyen commit but they would not tell, when they released me they told me that I was not to let Uyen's family know. After that I took some food up (for Uyen) but they would not let me see her...”, Phuong said.
After 2 days a man came down to our rental unit, produced a City Police ID card with the name Phong, confiscated Uyen 's camera, her clothes and personal items, together with some school books which Uyen had sent for. Phuong asked Mr. Phong about Uyen 's situation and was told by Mr. Phong that Uyen was staying with the police women, as they needed to interrogate her, so for now she could not be allowed home. Mr. Phong left a phone number for Phuong to inform him of any new information.
“I asked when would Uyen be released, Mr. Phong said when a crime was found they would send notices to the family”, Phuong recounted.
When asked about Uyen, Phuong said “I got to know Uyen through the ads looking for a roommate. Uyen was very friendly, we shared the unit for 1 year without any problem. Uyen was a very bright student. Mr. Phong (the policeman) complimented her on this and felt sorry for her when he took Uyen's report card from the university”.
According to the neighbours, recently there had always been strangers lurking 24/24 but they did not know whom they were watching, now they realized it was this student. When asked for Mr. Phong's phone number, Phuong was too scared to give it out because he had told her not to. Uyen 's mother had no choice but to leave and to wait for those who were supposed to protect the citizens, if they still have any remaining conscience, to contact her regarding the whereabout of her daughter.
We took Uyen's mother to the train station in the afternoon rain. She temporarily put aside her fear for the disappearance of her daughter to worry about her own mother who was still struggling in the emergency room.

Chúng tôi đưa bà đến phòng trọ của Phương Uyên, một căn phòng nhỏ khoảng 15m2 nằm trong hẻm đường Dương Đức Hiền, Quận Tân Phú. Tại đây, chúng tôi gặp em Phương, bạn cùng phòng. Phương nằm trong số ba bạn cùng phòng bị mời lên công an phường hơn bảy tiếng ngày 14/10 để điều tra về sinh hoạt của Uyên. “Em hỏi Uyên bị tội gì thì họ không nói, khi cho em về họ dặn không được thông báo về gia đình. Sau đó em đem cơm lên thì họ không cho gặp”.
Sau hai ngày thì một người xuống phòng trọ xuất thẻ ngành tên Phong, công an Thành Phố tịch thu máy ảnh của Uyên và một số quần áo cá nhân kèm theo bài vở mà Uyên gửi kèm. Phương hỏi tình hình của Uyên thì được anh Phong cho biết Uyên đang ở cùng với các chị nữ công an, cần khai thác phục vụ điều tra nên tạm thời chưa về được. Anh Phong để lại số điện thoại cho Phương và dặn có thông tin gì thì báo cho anh biết.

“Em hỏi khi nào thì Uyên mới được thả thì anh Phong nói đến khi nào tìm thấy tội sẽ gửi công văn về gia đình”, Phương kể.
Khi được hỏi về Uyên, Phương cho biết “Em biết Uyên qua việc đăng thông tin tìm người ở ghép, Uyên sống rất hòa đồng, bọn em sống chung một năm rưỡi nay mà không có chuyện gì. Uyên học rất giỏi, anh Phong (an ninh TP) còn khen và lấy làm tiếc khi cầm bảng điểm của Uyên ở trường”.
Cũng theo những người dân xung quanh thì khu hẻm thời gian gần đây luôn có những người lạ mặt theo dõi 24/24 nhưng không biết là ai, giờ mới biết là nữ sinh này. Khi hỏi về số điện thoại của anh Phong để hỏi thăm tin tức thì Phương sợ không dám cho vì anh Phong có căn dặn. Mẹ Uyên đành ra về và trông chờ một chút xíu lương tâm còn xót lại của những người mang nhiệm vụ bảo vệ người dân thông báo tung tích của con gái mình.
Chúng tôi tiễn bà ra sân ga trong chiều mưa vội vàng, bà tạm gác lại nỗi lo về sự mất tích của con gái để về lo cho người mẹ mình đang nằm cấp cứu trong một hoàn cảnh khó khăn.

En discutant avec nous, elle ne peut tenir ses larmes en parlant de son enfant. « A la maison, elle m’a dit de ne pas acheter les produits chinois. Elle écrit dans mon carnet les codes-barres de ses produits pour que je ne les oublie pas. Ces derniers jours, je ne pense qu’à elle à chaque fois je vois mon carnet. Sa grande-mère est pour le moment au service d’urgence à l’hopital suite d’un problème du valve cardiaque. Je n’ose pas lui dire la vérité. Je lui explique qu’elle est encore en examen. Or, en réalité, je ne sais pas où elle est»
Nous ramenons Mme Nguyen dans le logement de sa fille Uyen, une petite chambre d’environ 15m2 se situant dans un passage sur la rue de Duong Duc Hien, arrondissement Tan Phu de Sai Gon. Ici, nous avons rencontré Phuong, la colocataire de Uyen. Phuong fait partie de trois colocataires qui ont été convoqués par la police de l’arrondissement le 14 Octobre dernier, pour une interrogation de plus de 7h, dont l’objet a été de connaître les activités quotidiennes de Uyen. « Je leur ai demandé quelle infraction ou quel crime que Uyen a commis? Ils ne m’ont pas répondu. A la place, ils m’ont dit de ne pas informer de quoi que ce soit à sa famille. Quand je suis de retour pour apporter à Uyen quelques nourritures, ils m’ont interdit de la voir » nous raconte Phuong.
Deux jours après, une personne s’est présentée au logement des étudiantes avec une carte de police municipale portant le nom de Phong. Il a confisqué l’appareil photo de Uyen, ses affaires personnels ainsi que ses quelques écrits. Phuong a profité pour demander la situation de Uyen. M. Phong a répondu qu’elle est provisoirement gardée pour être interrogée par des policières. Pour cette raison, elle ne va pas rentrer dans les jours qui viennent. M. Phong a également laissé son numéro à Phuong, et lui dit de lui tenir informer dès qu’elle connaît quelques d’autres choses.
«Je lui ai demandé quand Uyen sera relachée ? M. Phong a répondu que la détention durera jusqu’à ce que l’on trouve les infractions. On informera la famille à ce moment là. » raconte Phuong.
En parlant de Uyen, Phuong nous dit “Je la connais grâce à une annonce de recherche de collocataire. Elle est très synmpathique. Depuis un an et demi de collocation, jamais nous avons eu de problème. Elle est brillante dans ses études. M. Phong (le policier) a même fait des compliments quand il regardait ses notes, et il disait que c’est regrettable.
Selon les voisins, il y a souvent des inconnus qui apparaissent dans le quartier ce dernier temps. Ces gens semblent de surveiller quelqu’un 24h/24. Il s’agit enfin de la petite étudiante qui est surveillée. Quand nous demandons le numéro de M. Phong afin de lui contacter, Phuong n’ose pas nous le donner. Elle a simplement très peur. La mère de Uyen n’a pas d’autres choix que de rentrer chez elle, en gardant un petit espoir que la police - ceux qui sont censés de veiller notre sécurité – lui informera où se trouve sa fille.
Nous l’accompagnons à la gare dans un après midi pluvieux. Pour le moment, elle doit laisser à côté la douleur sur la disparition de sa fille, pour s’occuper premièrement de l’hospitalisation de sa mère.
