Phương Thảo (Danlambao) Translated - Nguyễn Văn Hải, born in 1993, has been the latest victim who died while being detained at a police station. The incident happened at Đak Mil district police station, Đak Nong province.
Hải was a male suspect supposedly to have thrown stones at a passenger coach on the 14th national highway. Along with an accomplice, Hải has been prosecuted and jailed in connection with charges of “deliberately hurting others” and “ property damaging”.
At 3:00 pm, 13th December, 2015 Hải, showing serious symptoms of low blood pressure, weak and fast heartbeat hardly felt, was hospitalized by Đak Mil police.
According to Mr.Nguyễn Y Đông M.D., Head of the Intensive Care Unit at Đak Nong Province General Hospital, it was necessary to immediately notify his family as the patient was confirmed to be in critical condition, suffering a serious heart attack. However, despite intensive care, his heart stopped beating at 18:00pm the same day. At 19:00pm, the hospital confirmed he was dead. The initial cause was supposed to be a heart attack.
In the meantime, Lê Văn Đức, the victim’s father, spoke with the press: “Before the arrest, my son was completely healthy, with not any sign of illness. At about 11:00 am, 13th December, I was notified that he was being treated at Đak Mil hospital. When I got there, however, he was referred to the upper-level unit. On arriving at the provincial hospital, I saw him breathing oxygen, completely unable to talk to me. Shortly after that, the doctors told me he had died. Looking at his body in the morgue, family members found there were several bruises on the chest and the neck.”
On behalf of the local police, Colonel Lương Ngọc Lếp, Head of the investigation agency of Đak Nong province, said: “The confirmed initial cause of his death is a heart attack. An autopsy is being conducted by forensics, as required by legal procedures. The specific cause will be announced following the result of the autopsy.”
Also in Đak Nong province, on 18th November, 2015, a 16-year-old suspect named Nguyễn Xuân Quyền, living at Tâm Thắng, Cư Jut district, was found dead while being temporarily detained and investigated on charges of theft at Cư Jut police station. According to police reports, Quyền was then allowed to go out to exercise ; however, at the 18th push-up, he had a stroke and passed away.
Lê Văn Hải is the 10th victim who died while being temporarily imprisoned in 2015.
