Ladies and Gentlemen,
We, the undersigned, Vietnamese organizations and individuals, would like to hereby bring these facts to your notice and respectfully request that you pay more attention to and have timely and effective impacts on the matter, to have the typical prisoner of conscience Mr. Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức, fifty years of age, released from the Vietnam Government’s prison.
Before being arrested (on 24 May, 2009) and accused of “having political activities" and unjustly sentenced (on 20 January, 2010) for 16 years for "having attempts to overthrow the people's administration," Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức, a computer engineer, was a Vietnamese entrepreneurs and a successful pioneer in IT, who was the founder of the One Connection company, and who has successfully launched his businesses onto such International markets as in Singapore, USA, Australia, Canada, Russia, and etc.
As an intellectual talented patriot, who always wishes to moderately remove the limitations and shortcomings from the current situation of the social economy of the country, Tran Huynh Duy Thuc is always steadfast in his aspiration for reforming the country, lest Vietnam lag behind economically and the country may therefore rapidly achieve social progress and development. It should be very useful for the country and the people, and even for the Government, had the authorities considered this a valuable opportunity to listen to the intellectuals’ enthusiastic critical opinions, and had they known it was an initiative that would contribute plans to improve the management of the country’s social economy and to relieve social pressure through a safety valve, avoiding the risk of an outbreak of violence with incalculable consequences fatal to the nation's future.
The arrest and imprisonment of engineer Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức has caused strong discontent in numerous intellectuals domestically and those overseas, as well as in people who are very anxious for the destiny and future of Vietnam. Unjust conviction against Mr Tran Huynh Duy Thuc is contrary to the spirit of the Constitution of the Social Republic of Vietnam, and to the International covenant on civil and political rights adopted by the United Nations, as well as to other relevant international agreements that Vietnam has solemnly signed and committed to comply with; this action has undermined the State’s credibility in the eyes of progressive intellectuals and many people loving justice and social progress; hence the image of Vietnam becomes worse in the international arena.
In prison, after having repeatedly rebuffed attempts to have him deported from the country, Mr. Tran Huynh Duy Thuc began to go on an indefinite hunger strike on 24 May, 2016 to demand the rule of law enforcement, and that people be empowered to make their decisions on the country’s political institutions. Thousands of intellectuals and common people, domestic and overseas, were demonstrating their sympathy and they took hunger-strike with him.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We believe that the release of Mr. Tran Huynh Duy Thuc and other prisoners of conscience will effectively improve the image Vietnam politically in the international arena; it will help restoring the people’s confidence in the government, strengthening national unity against political, and economic hardship; and it will help strengthening the country’s defense in the current context; and it will also be a direct benefit to Vietnam.
For these reasons, we demand that Mr Tran Huynh Duy Thuc and other prisoners of conscience be urgently released from prison by the State of Vietnam.
Through this open letter, we are also respectfully calling for the supporting voice from all the governments in the world, all international organizations, and human rights defenders, as well as from the world’s public opinions. Please raise your voice to effectively impact on the release of Mr. Tran Huynh Duy Thuc and the other prisoners of conscience, that they may soon be free.
