Blogger and activist Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh (also known as Mẹ Nấm - Nấm’s Mother), has been arrested for her continuous demands that Formosa Steel be closed and brought to criminal prosecution. Khánh Hoà police have charged her with conducting propaganda against the state, under Article 88 of the Penal Code.
So, rather than restoring livelihoods for those affected and effectively managing the environmental disaster caused by Formosa, the Government has instead launched military force against protesters in Central Vietnam, and begun persecution of leading activists in other localities.
All their tactics are nothing but attempts to intimidate citizens who intend to protest; they protest to protect an integral, life-giving environment for future Vietnamese generations.
The Government’s attempts will undoubtedly fail.
Are the fishermen in Central Vietnam afraid?
“Not at all. The sea is dead, our boats abandoned, we have nothing left to be afraid of. The doors to our future can only open once Formosa’s doors are closed. We must continue our fight until the day Formosa leaves Vietnam.”
Are other activists too afraid to continue the route they have chosen?
